The local TV news headlines just included that a mum of a teenager is calling for "a ban on illegal raves".

Did I miss some nuance of the word illegal?

Many, many years ago, there used to be a sign in the waiting room at Euston station that read:

Illegal gambling on these premises (including the passing of betting slips) is prohibited by law

Actually, when I used to be into the rave/techno scene, there was a tendency for people to misuse the term ‘illegal rave’ to mean any non-commercial rave.

Granted many (possibly even most) of these were illegal, but by no means all...
