Tired

Another good film club evening yesterday -- this time with Hong Kong movies. An excellent thriller, "Infernal Affairs", demanding a lot of attention but repaying it thoroughly: wonderful filming, a good plot, well-paced throughout, and with so much symmetry between the "good guys" and "bad guys" that right to the end one could never be sure how the story would play out. To be recommended. Then, to follow, a Jackie Chan movie, about which the opposites of most of the above apply, but fun to watch! More fun people there that I hadn't met before (but hope to see more of), but a rather late night by the time I got home and sorted a few things out.

Meanwhile, my bike arrived! Hurrah! Unfortunately, today has been both full and rather nasty outside, so I haven't got to try it out yet (aka "find out whether I remember how to ride it"...)

Also in the day, one of my regular (if now less frequent, fortunately) visits to my GP, and some good news: I'm now finally being prescribed the medication I need on the NHS, which is very pleasant. It's quite a relief, after a number of issues that meant I wasn't quite sure if it was going to happen, with existing supplies dwindling.

Today's been far too full of work, except for the brief excitement of Liz being violently ill. This meant that I got to go and collect children from school and sit in on violin lessons (both of which I enjoyed); unfortunately, it also means that reaching a sensible stopping point for work has run on rather late into the evening... sigh. I still haven't really mastered getting the balance between work, family and social life right, I think. Or at least the balance between those three and sleeping...

A lazy day, catching up on bits and pieces... shopping for food, sorting things out around the house, trying to prevent infanticide on Liz's part...

I did manage to sneak out for a little while to go clothes shopping, though. Found a couple of nice black tops, so I might now venture out to the Calling. Also, rather to my surprise, found a nice, reasonably fitting and remarkably well-priced ballgown in one of the second-hand shops, so I can now tick off "posh frock for [livejournal.com profile] the_mendicant's party" on my to-do list... Sidetracked on the way home by a bookshop, so I now have the latest Pratchett and Patricia Cornwell paperbacks to add to the bedtime reading pile, for when I finish rereading Cryptonomicon, along with William Gibson's "Pattern Recognition" for when I feel like something a little more substantial.

Off to listen to lots of small children (ours included) playing assorted stringed instruments tomorrow. I think this probably counts as some sort of penance, but it should mostly be a fun day out for all of us -- workshops for the children, a picnic, and lots of time for us to catch up with people I haven't seen for some while. Note to self: I really must get my own violin playing back into some kind of order too...
